Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced a major initiative to expand the runway at Shillong Airport, a move aimed at significantly enhancing the state’s air connectivity and economic prospects.

The project, which seeks to enable direct flights from major metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, is being pursued with a determined and proactive approach.

Addressing the media, Sangma underscored the state government’s unwavering commitment to the project, highlighting ongoing efforts to work closely with central authorities. “We are adopting an aggressive and focused strategy to ensure that this project progresses smoothly and swiftly,” he said.

The proposed expansion of Shillong Airport’s runway is poised to be a game-changer for Meghalaya, improving accessibility to the state and opening new avenues for growth in infrastructure, tourism, and commerce.

By facilitating direct flights, the project is expected to reduce travel time and attract more visitors, thereby boosting the state’s tourism sector—a key contributor to Meghalaya’s economy.

Sangma also emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, noting that enhanced air connectivity would not only strengthen ties with other regions but also create economic opportunities for local businesses.

“This project will bring transformational changes to Meghalaya’s connectivity and development, positioning the state as a more accessible and attractive destination,” he added.

The state and central governments have prioritized the runway expansion, collaborating closely to address challenges and expedite progress.

Sangma expressed optimism about overcoming hurdles and completing the project within the stipulated timeline, ensuring that the benefits reach the people of Meghalaya as soon as possible.

This ambitious initiative underscores Meghalaya’s vision for a more connected future, with the runway expansion serving as a critical step toward realizing the state’s developmental goals.
