Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Additional Secretariat Complex at Dakopgre, Tura. The Rs. 156 crore project is seen as a historic milestone for the people of Garo Hills and the state, fulfilling a long-cherished aspiration.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister emphasised the significance of the project, describing it as a testament to the aspirations of the people of Garo Hills.
“This is not just a building but a symbol of progress and the realization of our collective dreams,” Sangma said.
He noted that the Additional Secretariat will serve all five districts of Garo Hills, alleviating the challenges residents face in accessing government services.
The chief minister highlighted the ongoing construction of the New Secretariat building in Shillong, an Rs. 1800 crore project designed to meet administrative needs for the next 100 years.
“Our goal is to bring administration closer to the people, ensuring accessibility and efficiency,” he remarked.
Close to 8,000 people attended the foundation-laying ceremony, underscoring its importance to the region.
Sangma also informed attendees about the government’s systematic efforts to ensure equitable development across districts and blocks.
He outlined initiatives including new block offices, sub-divisional buildings, district offices, and improvements in health, police, and educational infrastructure.
Reflecting on South Garo Hills’ recent 33rd foundation day, the chief minister acknowledged delays in infrastructure development but reiterated his government’s commitment to holistic progress.
“We have charted a roadmap to make Meghalaya one of the best states in the country,” he said.
He also highlighted ongoing projects such as Mini Secretariat buildings in Jowai and Pynrusla and renovations of administrative offices statewide.
The Additional Secretariat Complex, comprising three sections, will include dedicated offices for the chief minister, cabinet members, the Chief Secretary, and other senior officials, along with various government departments.
The chief minister announced plans to complete his complex by January 2027, with an inauguration set for January 21, 2027.
During the ceremony, Sangma expressed gratitude to cabinet colleagues and political parties for supporting the government’s vision.
