SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated three significant projects on Monday, addressing critical infrastructure needs and strengthening environmental sustainability.
The three major projects are the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, land reclamation project at the Waster Processing and Disposal site at Marten Mawlai and the construction of Internal Roads within the New Shillong Township at Mawkhanu, Mawpdang.
The inaugural ceremony, held at Mawkhanu, Mawpdang, witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, PHE Minister Marcuise Marak, Health Minister Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh, and Chief Secretary DP Wahlang.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sangma underscored the significance of the initiatives for the state’s future.
The flagship project, the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, with an estimated cost of Rs. 1600 Crore, marks one of the largest state-funded endeavours in Meghalaya’s history.
Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the allocation of Rs. 500 crore for the first phase of the project, highlighting its pivotal role in addressing the growing water needs of Shillong and New Shillong Township.
Designed to cater to the burgeoning population, the water supply scheme aims to serve over 29,889 residents, with projections reaching 198,997 by 2042 and 413,701 by 2057.
Additionally, the construction of internal roads within the New Shillong Township, at a cost of Rs. 185 crore, seeks to enhance connectivity and infrastructure development in the region.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Sangma outlined plans for the transformation of the Waste Processing and Disposal Site at Marten, Mawlai.
Highlighting the environmental significance of the project, he underscored efforts to convert accumulated waste into usable and recyclable products.
The project, expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months, aims to mitigate environmental concerns and foster sustainable waste management practices.
Looking ahead, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the allocation of a substantial budget of Rs. 10,000 crore for the development of the New Shillong Township, aiming to generate approximately 50,000 new job opportunities.
Furthermore, he revealed the Centre’s endorsement of Meghalaya’s New Shillong Township project, with an additional grant of Rs. 500 crore.
These initiatives, aligned with the government’s vision to propel Meghalaya towards a 10 billion US dollar economy, signify a concerted effort towards enhancing the state’s prosperity and well-being.
