Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the Mawhati C&RD Block in a move aimed at improving access to government services for local residents.

The ceremony, held at Umsohliat, was attended by key officials, including Minister for C&RD Abu Taher Mondol, Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, and Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh.

In his inaugural speech, Sangma highlighted that the establishment of the Mawhati block was a direct response to the need for administrative services to be more accessible.

“With nearly one lakh people under the Umsning C&RD, residents had to travel over 100 kilometers to reach the block office. This needed to change,” he explained.

He further emphasised that the Mawhati block would not only benefit the people of Mawhati but would also support several villages in Umsning, making essential services more accessible to these communities.

Sangma also outlined the government’s commitment to administrative reforms.

“While it will take time, we are working on bringing more services closer to the people through block offices,” he said.

He also assured the public that the necessary sanction for the Mawhati block office would be provided soon to ensure its smooth operation.

The chief minister also shared details of upcoming developmental projects, including the Umsning-Mawhati road, which is expected to be a crucial economic and administrative corridor for the region.

He encouraged local communities to collaborate with the government on these initiatives, urging officials working in the Mawhati C&RD Block to serve with empathy and dedication.

Minister Abu Taher Mondol expressed optimism about the positive impact the new infrastructure would have on the region’s economy.

He noted that the establishment of the C&RD block would not only bring administration closer to the people but also open up new livelihood opportunities.

“To achieve a $10 billion economy, we must ensure that rural Meghalaya’s economy thrives. The objective of creating blocks is to ensure that government machinery reaches the grassroots and provides technical support for various government missions,” Mondol stated.

Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar described the new block as a “beacon of hope,” symbolising progress and a brighter future for the region.

He expressed gratitude for the block’s establishment, which he said would foster development in areas such as health, education, and infrastructure.

“This block will uplift communities and enhance lives through the initiation of various government programmes,” Marngar said.

The new Mawhati C&RD Block, the 56th and youngest in the state, will also serve 66 villages in the Umsning constituency.
