Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Lummawbah Indoor Sports Hall on Wednesday, in a ceremony organised by the Dorbar Shnong Lummawbah in collaboration with the Lummawbah Sports & Cultural Club.

Adviser to the chief minister, Hamletson Dohling, was also present at the event. The sports facility was constructed at an investment of Rs. 1.55 crore.

In his inaugural address, the chief minister expressed his delight at the completion of the indoor sports hall, acknowledging the hard work of Hamletson Dohling and the Dorbar Shnong in bringing the project to fruition.

He noted, “It is heartening to see that the community, political leadership, and government are working together for the betterment of our localities, society, and the state as a whole.”

He further emphasised that the government values community participation and works in harmony with local traditions and cultures, as reflected in its programs and policies.

Sangma reassured the community that the government would fully support the development of Lummawbah Indoor Sports Hall into a vibrant hub where youth could engage in various sports activities.

“Over the past seven years, we’ve seen tremendous growth in the sports department and infrastructure, providing opportunities for our youth to explore and hone their talents,” he stated.

He also spoke about the significance of holding annual Meghalaya Games across the state, highlighting how such events foster unity, bonding, and camaraderie.

“Sports, music, and arts are crucial in keeping young people engaged in constructive activities, especially in today’s world full of distractions,” he added.

Sangma further underlined that investing in sports is not just an expense but an investment in the youth, teaching them valuable life skills, discipline, and teamwork.

“It’s not just about playing the game; it’s about the values and discipline that sports instill in individuals,” he remarked.

Addressing the demands raised by local leaders for the improvement of the area, the Chief Minister assured that all concerns would be reviewed.

“I have noted the requirements and, in consultation with the Dorbar Shnong, we will prioritize the most urgent needs,” he stated.

Additionally, he pledged the government’s support for the proposal by the Dorbar Shnong to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, for the construction of an auditorium dedicated to arts and culture.
