SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the 131-feet tall National Flag Mast at Barik Point in Shillong on Tuesday.
The chief minister also unveiled a master plan for the redevelopment of Barik, which will be renamed and transformed into a public space.
Taking to social media, the chief minster wrote, “Our National Flag stands tall in Barik Point, Shillong- a proud symbol of our nation’s unity and diversity. Fills me with immense pride to inaugurate the 131 feet tall National Flag Mast this morning.”
Unveiling the master plan for the redevelopment of Barik, Sangma said that Barik would be redeveloped into an iconic tourist attraction with elements that will showcase the diversity of the nation.
CM Sangma was accompanied by DGP Idashisha Nongrang, Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, Sports & Youth Affairs Department Secretary Isawanda Laloo, among others during the event.
Notably, the Meghalaya government is planning a series of initiatives to address the issues of traffic congestion, illegal parking, and to improve the public transportation system.
The government also plans to introduce electric buses in Shillong. The state is likely to receive 50 electric buses under the Prime Minister’s eBus Sewa Scheme of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
These electric buses, vital for reducing carbon emissions, are expected to arrive next year.
An additional amount of Rs 13 crore has been sanctioned for the state as a capital subsidy to build an e-bus depot and power infrastructure. The Shillong depot is planned for Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township.
As part of the Shillong Smart City Project, the state government is also coming up with an Integrated Command and Control Centre in New Shillong Township for Rs 214 crore, which is expected to be operational by next month.
