Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with several Cabinet Ministers and local MLAs, participated in the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of South Garo Hills district on Tuesday.
The event, held in Baghmara, underscored the state government’s commitment to the region’s development.
In his address, Sangma emphasized the government’s progress in transforming South Garo Hills since 2018.
“Over the past five years, projects worth Rs. 1,400 crore have been implemented, with an additional Rs. 400 crore to be sanctioned in the next 2-3 years under various schemes,” he stated.
Highlighting the region’s transformation, Sangma said, “Opportunities are being created for the local people, and the district is gradually advancing toward becoming a hub for growth and progress.”
As Meghalaya approaches its 60th year of statehood, the chief minister urged districts to focus on initiatives that ensure inclusive development.
“When Meghalaya celebrates 60 years, we must have reasons for every Meghalayan to celebrate and be proud,” he added.
He also stressed the importance of a collaborative effort for Meghalaya’s transformation, stating, “The government alone cannot bring about change. Every citizen must contribute with synergistic efforts.”
The Chief Minister touched upon the region’s tourism potential, lauding the rise of local entrepreneurship ventures and homestays.
“This marks the beginning of economic transformation that will secure the future for our citizens,” he remarked.
Sangma highlighted the opportunities in carbon credits, urging locals to protect the region’s forests and rivers to attract companies seeking carbon offset solutions.
During the event, the chief minister launched the Meghalaya Economic Inclusive Program (M-EIP) and the CM Fellowship, handed over cheques to beneficiaries under MegCARE, and laid the foundation stones for a synthetic athletic track and a new building for Captain Williamson Government Higher Secondary School.
Outstanding schools and students from the recent HSSLC and SSLC exams were also felicitated.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma and Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri commended the Chief Minister’s vision for the state’s development.

Ham Haverkort, Partnership Lead Asia at Rabobank Acorn, also addressed the gathering, highlighting collaborative efforts to uplift the region.
As part of his visit, Sangma inaugurated the newly constructed Prime Hub in Baghmara and inspected the revamped Baghmara Police Station, upgraded under the Police Infrastructure Development Fund.
“The government is committed to improving infrastructure for smoother administration and better service delivery,” he stated.
