Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday strongly denounced the alleged racial harassment of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, describing the incident as “unacceptable” and a serious blow to the spirit of India’s diversity.

The women were allegedly abused and intimidated by their neighbours following a dispute that arose during minor repair and electrical installation work in their rented apartment.

Police said the incident occurred around 3.30 pm on February 20, when drilling work was underway in the fourth-floor flat.

A video purportedly showing the confrontation has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation.

Reacting to the incident, Sangma said the language and behaviour displayed in the altercation were “deeply disturbing and inexcusable,” especially in a country built on cultural and social pluralism.

He stressed that mutual respect must be the foundation of coexistence in a diverse society like India.

Assuring support to the victims, the chief minister said he was prepared to raise the matter “to the highest level” to ensure that appropriate action is taken.

He also appealed to political leaders, civil society groups and community organisations in Delhi to play a proactive role in preventing such incidents and fostering social harmony.

Emphasising solidarity among people from the Northeast, Sangma called for greater awareness and collective action against discrimination.

He said racial abuse and prejudice in any form must not be tolerated, urging citizens to speak out, stand together and challenge attitudes that promote division and exclusion.
