Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has strongly condemned the alleged threat issued by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) against Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, president of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), calling it “serious and completely unacceptable”.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said any form of threat or intimidation undermines peace and has no place in a democratic society. He stressed that such acts cannot be justified regardless of who is being targeted.

“The identity or position of the person being threatened does not matter. Whether it is an elected representative, a businessperson or an ordinary citizen, threats are unacceptable. The safety and security of our people is paramount,” the chief minister said.

Sangma said the state administration and law enforcement agencies are treating the matter with seriousness and will take all necessary steps to ensure peace and maintain public order.

On the broader issue of militancy, the chief minister said the government remains open to the possibility of peace talks with the HNLC, but cautioned that such a process requires careful preparation and cooperation from all stakeholders.

“Peace is our top priority. However, peace negotiations cannot be rushed. They require sincerity, commitment and confidence-building measures to ensure meaningful outcomes,” he said.

He reiterated that violence, threats or intimidation only derail the peace process and create fear among citizens.

Sangma added that the government would continue to focus on development and inclusive governance while firmly upholding the rule of law.

“We want progress, stability and harmony in Meghalaya. For that, everyone must respect the law and work towards constructive solutions,” he added.
