Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday called on legislators, particularly those representing border areas, to reach out to him directly in case of any untoward incidents in their constituencies.

Speaking in the Assembly, Sangma emphasised his commitment to protecting people living in sensitive border regions.

“You have a direct hotline with me. If any situation arises in your constituency, I will personally ensure that our people in the border areas are protected,” Sangma stated.

He acknowledged the ongoing challenges but assured that the Meghalaya government would not shy away from its responsibility to safeguard residents in border regions.

Commitment to resolving border disputes

Replying to Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, the chief minister reiterated his government’s resolve to address the remaining border disputes with Assam.

He assured the Assembly that efforts are underway to find lasting peace in the affected areas.

“We have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resolve six areas of differences. While the issue is complex, we are committed to finding solutions,” he said.

Sangma highlighted that unlike previous administrations, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has taken bold steps to engage in dialogue on the contentious border issues.

He cited the successful resolution of the Tarabari sector dispute as an example, noting that the will of the people was prioritised, resulting in the sector being brought under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction.

Infrastructure development in resolved areas

The chief minister assured the Assembly that the government is working on a war footing to provide infrastructure, including road connectivity and essential services, to residents in areas where disputes have been resolved.

He also expressed concern over the alleged use of force by Assam in certain border areas, describing the situation as a persistent challenge over the past 53 years.
