Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday handed over the Chief Minister’s Sports Scholarship Scheme to 44 athletes across 10 disciplines at a ceremonial send-off for Team Meghalaya, which will represent the state at the Khelo India Games 2025 in Bihar from May 4 to 15.
The scholarship scheme, designed to support and nurture athletic talent, is part of the government’s broader push to strengthen Meghalaya’s sports ecosystem through infrastructure development and policy reforms over the past six years.
“These scholarships recognise the hard work and dedication of our athletes, encouraging them to strive for greater achievements and bring pride to Meghalaya and the nation,” said the chief minister during the event.
Recalling the state of sports in Meghalaya prior to 2018, Sangma noted that the sector was previously hindered by the absence of a coherent policy, inadequate infrastructure, and limited financial support.
Since assuming office, the MDA government has revived the long-defunct Meghalaya Games—which had been held only twice in 48 years prior to 2019—and transformed them into a rotational, district-level event aimed at grassroots talent discovery and inclusive participation.
The chief minister also highlighted the state’s “mission-mode” approach to developing sports infrastructure across both urban and rural areas.
This includes the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training facilities, and local sports hubs.
Speaking about the newly launched scholarship scheme, Sangma said it is intended not only to ease the financial burden on athletes but also to formally acknowledge their achievements.
“The scholarship is not just about money, it is about recognition. It’s a message to every athlete that your hard work matters, and we stand with you,” he added.
Sangma also used the occasion to provide an update on preparations for the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya is set to host.

He said the state is committed to delivering a world-class event, with a comprehensive plan underway that includes urban renewal, beautification, and environmental clean-up projects.
Key initiatives include the rejuvenation of the Wah Umkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers—symbolic of broader efforts to transform Shillong, Tura, and Jowai, the cities expected to be central to the Games.
“This is not just about sports. It is about showcasing the spirit, talent, and beauty of Meghalaya to the rest of the country and the world,” Sangma concluded.
