Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang is set to meet the Secretary and Additional Secretary of Higher Education, Government of India, on January 13 to address pressing concerns surrounding North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
Speaking to reporters, Wahlang expressed optimism about resolving the ongoing issues at NEHU as he prepares to engage with top officials in charge of higher education at the central level.
“I am in touch with the Secretary and Additional Secretary of the Government of India. On Monday (January 13), I will meet the Secretary to brief him on the situation at NEHU, as he has just assumed the position of Secretary of Higher Education,” Wahlang said.
Adding, “I will also provide recommendations on necessary steps for the university, and I am hopeful for a breakthrough soon.”
The crisis at NEHU stems from allegations of irregularities and administrative lapses under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. P S Shukla.
These issues have sparked widespread protests led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), both calling for Prof. Shukla’s removal.
In response to these allegations, the Ministry of Education recently formed a two-member committee to investigate the claims.
The committee’s findings, along with Wahlang’s discussions with central officials, are expected to play a critical role in addressing the unrest.

The NEHU community has been vocal about its grievances, with student unions accusing the administration of undermining the university’s autonomy and credibility.
The protests have disrupted campus operations, heightening demands for swift intervention from both state and central governments.
The outcome of Wahlang’s meeting and the ministry’s investigation could pave the way for resolving the ongoing turmoil at the university.
