Shillong: The Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has served show-cause notices to four registered political parties for failing to participate in any elections since 2019, warning of possible deregistration if they do not respond.
CEO BDR Tiwari said on Thursday that the notices were issued to the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP), North East Social Democratic Party (NESDP) and the Regional Democratic Secular Congress (RDSC).
The parties have been directed to submit written explanations, supported by affidavits, constitutions and other relevant documents, by September 3. They must also appear in person before the Commission on the same date.
“If they fail to comply, necessary action, including deregistration, will be initiated without further notice,” Tiwari cautioned.
The move comes after a review revealed that these parties have not fielded candidates in either Assembly or Lok Sabha elections for the past six years.
