The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday finalised the proposed schedule for elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
The dates await the formal approval of Governor C H Vijayashankar.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who chaired the Cabinet meeting, shared details of the decision with the media.
“The Cabinet has completed its deliberations and finalized the schedule for the conduct of elections to the KHADC and JHADC. The entire election timeline has received Cabinet approval,” he stated.
While the Cabinet’s decision marks an important milestone, the Chief Minister clarified that the process is not yet complete.
He underscored that the official announcement of election dates is contingent on the Governor’s approval.
“As you are aware, these proposals require the Governor’s clearance before they can be made official. Once we have his approval, we will announce the dates formally,” Sangma explained.
The elections to the KHADC and JHADC hold significant importance for the people of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, as these councils play a vital role in administering the areas under their jurisdiction, particularly in matters related to local governance and cultural preservation.
The Cabinet has forwarded the finalized schedule to the Governor, and the state now awaits his decision to proceed with the formal declaration of poll dates.
This development comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure timely elections to the autonomous councils, which are integral to the unique administrative framework of the state.
The proposed schedule reflects the government’s commitment to upholding democratic processes and ensuring representation for the people of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
