Shillong: In a significant move to establish itself as a premier filmmaking destination, the Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy, 2025.

This landmark decision is set to unlock the state’s potential as a prominent hub for film production across the Northeast and beyond.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the policy’s approval, emphasizing that it followed an extensive consultation process that incorporated feedback from over 200 stakeholders on the Draft Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy.

“After receiving over 200 stakeholder feedbacks on the Draft Meghalaya Film Policy, we incorporated the inputs and presented the final policy to the Cabinet for approval,” CM Sangma posted on X.

“Recognizing Meghalaya’s potential as a filmmaking hub in the Northeast, we are launching the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025 to tap into this opportunity,” he said.

The chief minister added, “A dedicated Film Facilitation Cell has been formed, comprising representatives from Tourism, Arts & Culture, DIPR, and other departments to coordinate efforts and promote Meghalaya as a premier film destination—regionally, nationally, and internationally.”

The newly approved policy outlines a comprehensive framework of financial incentives and institutional support designed to attract productions of varying scales.

Productions in national or international languages that promote Meghalaya tourism, with at least 75% of shooting done within the state, are eligible for incentives up to Rs 1 crore or 25% of the total production cost.

To foster indigenous talent and storytelling, a subsidy of Rs 50 lakh will be provided for films made in Khasi, Pnar, and Garo languages. This incentive can be availed of once every two years by a filmmaker.

Besides, subsidies will be extended to encourage the production of TV serials, web series, and original Over-The-Top (OTT) shows that are made in Meghalaya.

Additionally, grants will be provided specifically for documentary and short film projects shot within the state, recognizing their role in showcasing Meghalaya’s unique narratives and landscapes.
