Khliehriat: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) Khliehriat Circle, East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, has raised concerns over the severe dust pollution caused by ongoing construction activities on the National Highway in the region.

In response to mounting public grievances, JNC leaders held a meeting with the site engineer from Purbanchal Buildtech Pvt. Ltd., the company responsible for the project.

The meeting was prompted by growing complaints from commuters, students, and local residents about the hazardous levels of dust in the area, which have been negatively impacting daily life and public health.

The JNC had previously submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging for measures to mitigate dust pollution, specifically requesting that the roads be watered regularly during construction.

Following the memorandum, the Deputy Commissioner issued orders to the contractors to implement dust control measures.

However, it was later revealed that the contractor had failed to follow these directives, prompting further action from the JNC.

In response, the JNC convened with the site engineer to discuss the issue directly.

During the meeting, the JNC representatives emphasised the detrimental effects of dust on public health and called for immediate intervention.

They insisted that the contractor take responsibility for addressing the problem and ensure that dust control measures were implemented without delay.

Following the meeting, the site engineer verbally committed to increasing efforts by watering the road twice a day to curb the dust pollution.

The JNC has stated that it will closely monitor the situation to ensure compliance with the new measures. “We will continue to track the progress and ensure the contractor’s commitment is upheld. The health and well-being of our community must remain a top priority,” said a JNC spokesperson.

The Council has also warned that it will escalate the matter if the required actions are not taken promptly.
