Shillong: Senior BJP leader and Guinness World Record holder James Syiemiong has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, urging the state government to establish the ‘Raja Memorial Viewpoint’ as a symbolic tourism and awareness landmark in Meghalaya’s Sohra.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Syiemiong, who is the former district president of the BJP, asked the government to develop the ‘Raja Memorial Viewpoint’ at or near the location associated with the honeymoon tragedy.
This proposal follows the sensational murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly killed last month during his honeymoon in Meghalaya by his wife Sonam and her paramour.
“In light of this, I would like to propose the development of the ‘Raja Memorial Viewpoint’ — a symbolic and scenic site at or near the location associated with this tragedy. This memorial will not only honor the victims and their families but also serve as: a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all parts of India who wish to pay tribute; a civic education site promoting public awareness on women’s safety, tourist security, and moral responsibility,” Syiemiong wrote.
“A historic and emotional landmark, akin to the legacy of Nongkalikai Falls, making it a potential contender for the 8th Wonder of the World from Meghalaya,” he added.
He further highlighted the key features proposed, which include a symbolic memorial sculpture or plaque, viewing deck and landscaped area, information panels or a digital archive (QR-based) on safety, justice, and remembrance, and a “pledge wall” for visitors to commit to values of safety and justice.

“This initiative can be developed under the Meghalaya Tourism Promotion Scheme or through CSR/public-private partnership models. It would not only preserve memory but also responsibly channel the current public sentiment into meaningful tourism and awareness infrastructure,” Syiemiong further said.
