Shillong: Meghalaya has earned national acclaim for its palliative care initiatives, securing the second position in India under the National Programme for Palliative Care (NPPC) of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Officials from the Meghalaya Health Department said the honour reflects the state’s strong commitment to compassionate, patient-focused healthcare.
They highlighted that the achievement validates the state’s efforts to design and implement innovative models of service delivery that ensure comfort, dignity, and an improved quality of life for patients facing serious or terminal illnesses.
The recognition was announced during the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025 observance held on Saturday at the Bagchi-Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The accomplishment, they added, was the result of consistent teamwork by district health officials, medical professionals, and community health workers who have worked collectively to expand and strengthen palliative care services across Meghalaya.
Through their combined effort, Meghalaya has now emerged as one of the leading examples in the country for providing accessible and humane palliative care to those in need.
