SHILLONG: Meghalaya, renowned for its lush landscapes and unwavering commitment to sustainability, is set to receive the prestigious “Green Ribbon Champion” award for outstanding environmental commitment. The felicitation ceremony will take place on Thursday at the Hyatt Regency in New Delhi.
This honour acknowledges the northeastern state’s tireless efforts towards environmental preservation, setting Meghalaya apart as a trailblazer in sustainable practices. One of the state’s significant achievements is the consistent promotion of sustainable tourism, which is evidenced by its initiatives to rejuvenate and safeguard rivers and other aquatic resources.
Furthermore, Meghalaya’s innovative “Payment for Environmental Services” initiative showcases its forward-thinking approach. With systematic reporting on mining and plantation activities, Meghalaya has set an audacious goal to plant a staggering five million trees by 2025.
The state’s accomplishments in sustainability are not just policy-driven. The essence of these efforts resonates with the intrinsic values of Meghalaya’s residents. Their profound respect for nature, combined with a judicious approach to resource utilisation, has culminated in a blossoming sustainable economy. The tourism department too stands out in these endeavours, actively guiding the state’s trajectory towards its green objectives, and paving the way for a thriving eco-tourism sector.
The “Green Ribbon Champions” initiative aims to recognise and laud the commendable efforts of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and private corporations committed to forging a greener tomorrow. This endeavour salutes a broad array of green initiatives, spanning sustainability drives, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, waste management, and the propagation of renewable energy sources.
