SHILLONG: The highly-anticipated 3rd edition of the ‘Sohra International Half Marathon’ will take place on September 21 in Meghalaya’s Cherrapunjee.
This mega event is expected to attract over 7,000 runners from around the world, including athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Bangladesh.
Recognized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the marathon is being organized by the Meghalaya Athletics Association in association with the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya.
Dikki D. Shira, Director of Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs, confirmed that adequate funds have been allocated for organizing the international event.
He expressed confidence in the event’s success, stating that all preparations are in place and sub-committees are actively functioning.
John F. Kharshiing, President of MSOA, emphasized the significance of health and fitness in the hill state and highlighted the marathon’s role in promoting these values.
The event will feature various categories, including 21k elite open (above 18 years), 21k open (above 18 years), 10K open (40 to 50 years), 10k open (50 to 60 years), 10k veteran (above 60 years), and a 5k fun run.
Organizers have reported a significant increase in participant numbers, with 7,736 runners registered so far.

The marathon will commence from Laitsohpliah for the 21k category, Wah Kba for the 10k category, and Cherrapunjee Presbyterian School for the 5k category.
The last date for registration is September 10.
