Shillong: The proceedings of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly were suspended on Friday as members came together to mourn the passing of Shillong Lok Sabha MP Ricky AJ Syngkon, who died on Thursday evening.
Speaker Thomas A Sangma announced that the House would confine itself to obituary references for the day as a mark of respect to the Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader. He added that a revised schedule of sittings would be issued subsequently.
The presentation of the Meghalaya Budget for 2026–27, which had been slated for Friday, was deferred.
Syngkon, 54, reportedly collapsed while playing futsal on the outskirts of Shillong and was later declared dead at a private hospital at around 8:45 pm.
In a message of condolence, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “Paid respects to the family of Hon’ble Shillong MP, (L) Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon at his residence. He was a true gentleman and a leader who touched many lives with his values and principles. He was passionate about people service and that reflected immensely in his work. He left us too soon. May God grant his soul rest and solace to all his loved ones.”
