Shillong: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will convene its Budget Session from February 16 to 27, comprising a total of 10 working days, Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma announced on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Tuesday, the Speaker said the schedule was finalised after detailed deliberations to ensure adequate time for legislative business.
He said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will present the budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year on February 20.
According to Sangma, three days have been earmarked for private members’ business, while the remaining days will be devoted to government business.
Acknowledging recurring concerns over time constraints during Assembly sessions, the Speaker said measures have been put in place to ensure smoother proceedings. He added that the House would remain flexible with sitting hours, if required.
“On the day of voting on supplementary demands, the Assembly will sit until 3 pm, but the schedule may be extended if necessary,” he said.
Dismissing speculation about any postponement, Sangma confirmed that the session would go ahead as scheduled, adding that the decision to begin the Budget Session earlier was taken on the advice of the government.
