Shillong: The National People’s Party (NPP) has reestablished itself as the dominant force by securing 13 out of 29 seats in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), as announced on Monday.
Despite its lackluster performance in the Khasi Hills polls, the NPP’s impressive showing in JHADC places it in a strong position to lead the next Executive Committee, likely with backing from MDCs of aligned parties.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP), which dominated the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council elections, managed to win only eight seats in JHADC.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) each won three seats, while Independent candidates claimed victory in two constituencies.
The NPP’s 13-seat triumph in JHADC is seen as a significant boost to its political standing in the region.
Constituencies like Nartiang Wahiajer, Raliang, and Sutnga Narwan contributed to its success.
Meanwhile, the VPP secured important wins in areas such as Nangbah Mihmyntdu and Jowai North, maintaining a strong foothold in the council.

UDP’s representation includes constituencies like War East and Musniang Rangad, while INC found success in Khlietyrchi and Saipung Nongkhlieh. Independent candidates made their mark with wins in Jowai South and Rymbai Khliehriat.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) faced yet another disappointing outcome in the JHADC elections.
Neither party managed to secure even a single seat, highlighting their continued struggle to gain traction and support within the region.
This lackluster performance underscores the ongoing challenges these parties face in establishing a significant presence in the state’s political landscape.
