Shillong: In a major anti-narcotics operation, authorities destroyed around 10 tonnes of cannabis plants spread across five hectares in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district, police said on Tuesday.
The joint operation was carried out at Laitlulong village in the Sohiong area by the district police in coordination with the forest, excise, and anti-narcotics task force, officials said.
During the drive, the multi-department team systematically uprooted cannabis plants illegally cultivated across several households in the area.
No person was arrested in connection with the operation, police said, adding that efforts are on to identify those involved in the illegal cultivation.
Cultivating cannabis is a punishable offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing similar drives in other parts of the district.
The district administration and law enforcement agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with authorities to help maintain peace and order in the area.
