SHILLONG: The Meghalaya police are yet to make any arrests in connection with the recent assault and murder of a labourer at Mawlai Mawroh.
Despite ongoing efforts, no suspects have been apprehended, though the police claim to have garnered certain leads into the incident.
In response to the escalating violence, the East Khasi Hills Police, in collaboration with the 167 Battalion of BSF, undertook route marches across several localities on Saturday.
The aim was to bolster security measures and reassure the community amidst heightened tensions.
The route marches, spanning approximately 20 kilometers, canvassed sensitive areas of Shillong, including Dhankheti, Laitumkhrah, Goraline, Nongrim Hills, Nongshilliang, Rynjah Market, Lapalang, RR Colony, and Pohkseh.
Led by SDPO Sadar Ashish and Jyoti Wahlang, the initiative aimed to foster community engagement and restore public confidence.
Simultaneously, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in Shillong has launched an inquiry into the tragic killing.
Acting on suo motu cognizance of the incident, the MHRC has demanded answers from the authorities.
A notice has been dispatched to the Director General of Police, Meghalaya, LR Bishnoi soliciting an Action Taken Report within 15 days.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, condemning the heinous act, assured swift action in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritising the investigation and ensuring accountability for the crime.
Expressing solidarity with the victims’ families, Sangma vowed to deliver justice in the case.
The incident, which occurred on April 10, witnessed Arjun Ray (52), a construction labourer, along with two others, brutally attacked by unidentified assailants.
Despite efforts, Ray succumbed to his injuries at NEIGRIHMS, while the two remaining victims continue to receive treatment at the hospital.
As investigations continue and community tensions remain high, authorities are under mounting pressure to apprehend the culprits and quell unrest in the district.
