BAGHMARA: A massive landslide struck Baghmara town in South Garo Hills, wreaking havoc on a school building and several shops on Thursday.
The State Bank of Baghmara is also under threat as the landslide encroaches perilously close to its premises.
The incident, unfolding earlier today, has caused significant destruction in the town centre, sparking fears of further damage.
Local authorities are currently assessing the situation and coordinating rescue efforts to ensure the safety of residents and minimise additional losses.
The landslide comes amidst days of relentless rainfall in South Garo Hills, triggering multiple landslides that have disrupted daily life and blocked vital roadways.
According to the District Disaster Management Officer of South Garo Hills, recent landslides had earlier blocked key roads, including the PWD link road from Dimapara to Ruga and the road from Baghmara to Chokpot.
Prompt action by local officials swiftly cleared these blockages, restoring crucial access routes for residents.
In response to subsequent incidents, authorities promptly cleared another obstruction on the PWD road from Baghmara to Moheshkola at Panda village, ensuring the road was operational by day’s end.
Additionally, a landslide near Baghmara Circuit House at Bolsalgre on the PWD NH road prompted ongoing construction of a subway to prevent future disruptions.
The coordinated efforts between the Executive Engineer PWD (R), Circle Inspector cum Officer in Charge of Baghmara Sadar Police Station, and other agencies have been instrumental in mitigating the impact of these landslides.
Their swift response and efficient collaboration underscore South Garo Hills’ resilience and effective disaster management strategies.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) remains vigilant, monitoring the situation closely amidst continued heavy rainfall across the state, ready to deploy further resources as needed.
