Byrnihat: In a counter-insurgency operation, Ri-Bhoi District Police apprehended Khundongbam Herojit Meitei, the Finance Secretary of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), on Monday at Nongthymmai, 15th Mile, Byrnihat.
Acting on intelligence inputs that Meitei was hiding in a rented house and engaging in extortion and other subversive activities in Meghalaya and neighbouring states, the police conducted a targeted operation, leading to his arrest at 8:30 pm.
During the raid, authorities seized two mobile phones and other incriminating materials.
During interrogation, Meitei confessed to being an active member of the KCP (PWG) and admitted to collecting funds on behalf of the organisation.
Initial investigations suggest that Meitei had taken refuge near the Assam-Meghalaya border to evade heightened security crackdowns on militant groups in Manipur.
He is also suspected of conspiring with militant organisations based in Myanmar and Nepal.

Meitei has a history of criminal activities, including an arrest in Manipur last year for illegal firearm possession and another in Dimapur in 2018 in connection with drug trafficking.
A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
Meghalaya Police emphasised its vigilance against anti-social and anti-national activities, assuring that strict legal action will be taken to maintain law and order.
