Shillong: Traffic movement in parts of Upper Shillong will remain regulated for over two weeks following the start of construction work on a section of the Shillong–Dawki Road near Mahadev Khola Dham in the 101 Area, East Khasi Hills police said.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, IPS, said the work is being carried out along a 250-metre stretch of the road, making it necessary to restrict the movement of certain categories of vehicles and introduce diversions to ensure safety and smooth flow of traffic.

Trucks, medium commercial vehicles such as 407 and 409 models, and bazaar buses travelling from Upper Shillong will be redirected at 5th Mile towards the Shillong Peak Road–Pomlakrai route.

Vehicles approaching from the MES (Rilbong) side will be diverted through Anjalee Point, Barik Point, Dhankheti Point, Fire Brigade Point, Madanrting, Laitkor and Pomlakrai.

Heavy motor vehicles coming from Nongstoin and Mawngap will not be allowed to enter the affected stretch and will instead be diverted at Mawmaram junction towards the Lawmei–Umsaw road.

Similarly, HMVs arriving from Sohra and Pynursla will be rerouted at 7th Mile, Upper Shillong, through the Mawngap–Mawmaram route.

Police said an exception has been made for school buses, which will be allowed to operate between Upper Shillong and the MES point to avoid disruption to students.

A speed limit of 20 kmph has also been imposed for all vehicles passing through the entire 101 Area during the construction period.

The traffic restrictions and diversions will be in place from February 3 to February 18, 2026. Police have appealed to commuters for cooperation and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused during the implementation of the temporary measures.
