SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Sunday issued a stern warning to the central and state governments, asserting that they would take matters into their own hands and implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Meghalaya if no concrete steps were taken soon.
Slamming the government’s inaction, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said that despite the resolution passed in 2019 seeking ILP implementation, the central government is yet to take any significant action.
“We are now in 2024, and the Centre is still merely studying the resolution,” Marngar lamented.
The students’ union vowed to seek the support of the local indigenous population and continue its efforts to combat illegal immigration in various regions of the state.
They also condemned the state government for failing to implement the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, which was designed to address the influx of illegal immigrants.
Marngar questioned the state government’s intentions, demanding to know when they would finally implement the MRSSA 2016.
He recalled that the resolution to implement ILP in 2019 had garnered support from 60 MLAs, further emphasizing the need for immediate action.
“We want to send a strong message to the government that we are going to implement the ILP on our own,” he warned.

He expressed frustration at the government’s inability to enact effective laws to address the issue of illegal immigration, despite decades of waiting.
In July, the KSU established an ILP check gate at Pahammawlein village along National Highway 6 in Ri-Bhoi district to prevent the entry of suspected illegal migrants into the state.
