Shillong: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has urged Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal to intervene in resolving the long-standing issue of the lack of electricity in Dong Mihsngi, a locality of Bataw village, East Jaintia Hills.
During a recent meeting with the minister, JSU representatives highlighted the severe hardships faced by the residents due to the absence of a power connection.
The union emphasised that the lack of electricity has deeply affected students, households, and local economic activities, especially during evening hours.
“Students are unable to study at night, families struggle with daily chores, and small businesses dependent on electricity are unable to operate effectively,” said a JSU representative. “The absence of street lighting also raises safety concerns in the area.”
Responding to the concerns, the minister assured the delegation that the issue would be addressed in the coming months under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
He pledged to prioritise the electrification of the locality, recognising its impact on education, safety, and livelihood.
The JSU expressed gratitude to the minister for his assurance, stating that the community is hopeful of a swift resolution to this long-pending issue.

“We thank Cabinet Minister Shri A.T. Mondal for his commitment to resolving this pressing matter,” said Helpful Sumer, Publicity Secretary of JSU-Southern Border Zone.
Dong Mihsngi remains one of several remote areas in the region still awaiting reliable electricity access—a challenge that continues to hinder rural development despite Meghalaya’s broader electrification goals.
