Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday pressed the Meghalaya government to tighten checks at all entry points, citing fears of increased movement of people from neighbouring states amid ongoing voter list revision exercises in Assam and West Bengal.
The organisation said it is worried about what it described as unchecked arrivals into Meghalaya, warning that any lapse in monitoring could pose risks to public safety, internal security and the legal rights of local residents.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said authorities must act without delay to prevent unauthorised entries.
He reminded the government that it has full legal powers to verify identities of anyone entering the state and to impose restrictions when required.
The group has submitted a set of demands, including compulsory registration and identification of all entrants from regions currently undergoing special revision of electoral rolls, along with deployment of police personnel and district officials at key border gates to ensure strict enforcement.
HYC further called for an emergency coordination mechanism involving deputy commissioners, district police chiefs and border management units.

It also sought a formal government order outlining the laws and administrative measures being applied under the situation.
The organisation insisted that coordination with Assam and West Bengal was necessary to curb undocumented movement across state lines.
Citing recent security data, HYC noted that 46 Bangladeshi nationals have already been detained this year for illegal entry into Meghalaya.
Terming the situation “a matter of serious concern”, the group urged the government to take prompt and decisive action to safeguard the state’s interests while operating fully within the legal framework.
