Shillong: The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has postponed the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations scheduled for March 11 and 12 in West Garo Hills district in view of the volatile law-and-order situation in the region.
The decision comes amid continuing unrest linked to the nomination filing process for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
According to MBOSE, the examinations for the subjects Music and Anthropology that were scheduled for March 11 and March 12 will not be conducted in West Garo Hills for the time being. However, the examinations will continue as scheduled in the remaining districts of the state.
In an official notification, MBOSE stated, “It is notified for information of all concerned that due to the volatile situation prevailing in West Garo Hills, the HSSLC Examinations scheduled for the 11th March 2026 (Music) and 12th March 2026 (Anthropology) stand cancelled for West Garo Hills only.”
“The same shall be rescheduled for some other dates to be notified later. The examinations for the rest of the districts will be conducted as per schedule,” the notification said.
Meanwhile, Army columns have been deployed in the West Garo Hills district, amid the rising violence in the region.
Two persons were reportedly killed after security forces in West Garo Hills opened fire to disperse an agitated crowd in the Chibinang area amid tensions over the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election nomination process.
