Shillong: Meghalaya Police on Saturday arrested one Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) cadre, who is believed to be raising funds for the banned orgaisation.
Police officials confirmed to Northeast News that a self styled personal security officer (PSO) of one of the senior HNLC leaders has been arrested.
Acting on a tip off, a team of East Khasi Hills police personnel arrested the 41-year-old HNLC man, identified as Storgy Lyngdoh from his residence at Mawlynrei, Khliehshnong Block-C.
However, it could not be confirmed Storgy Lyngdoh was PSO to which senior leader of the HNLC, and when did he reach his home at Mawlynrei.
Police recovered one mobile phone along with one Banglalink SIM card and one Indian Airtel SIM card besides a 1GB SD memory card.
The police team whisked away Storgy Lyngdoh to an undisclosed destination, and has started interrogation of the Khasi insurgent leader.
Police are trying to ascertain Storgy Lyngdoh’s involvement in extortion, regrouping, and mobilising support of people, especially the youths.
Storgy Lyngdoh’s arrest has been within 48 hours of Meghalaya DGP L R Bishnoi’s announcement to initiate a cyber investigation into allegations of extortion by the HNLC through WhatsApp messages.
Earlier in January, the proscribed outfit had pulled out of the tripartite peace with the Centre and state government.
The HNLC’s withdrawal from the peace negotiations had raised concerns about the prospects of reconciliation with requests pouring in from the government and opposition alike to revive peace talks.
