SHILLONG: The once notorious camps of the disbanded Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) have now metamorphosed into vibrant tourist attractions in South Garo Hills District.
This revelation was made by cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma, who commended the progress achieved under the six-year-old Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
Sangma highlighted the remarkable transition, stating, “Tourists are flocking to a specific location that once served as the GNLA’s camp, now transformed into a captivating tourist hub. This metamorphosis has not only enriched the local populace but has also provided a source of livelihood as tourists throng the area.”
The minister further noted a surge in tourism activities, with an influx of visitors from within the state, across the nation, and even beyond borders exploring the scenic wonders of his constituency.
Reflecting on the region’s tumultuous past marred by militancy, Sangma lauded the MDA government’s relentless efforts in reshaping the socio-political landscape of Garo Hills.

“Garo Hills now exudes tranquillity akin to paradise. It has embraced peace wholeheartedly,” he added.
Addressing prior concerns of a potential resurgence of GNLA activities, Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi, in February, reiterated the state’s commitment to vigilance and proactive measures.
Amid circulating social media speculations, DGP Bishnoi had urged public cooperation in verifying information and assured ongoing investigations to address any resurgence effectively.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong too had echoed this sentiment, reaffirming the government’s unwavering stance against any reformation of the militant outfit.
“Our security forces remain vigilant, poised to thwart any regrouping attempts. We stand prepared to counter such activities,” Tynsong had reassured.
The strategic conversion of former GNLA camps into tourist magnets stands as a proof to the region’s resilient spirit and the government’s dedication to fostering peace, prosperity, and sustainable development in the picturesque landscape of Garo Hills.
