Shillong: A Ghanaian national has been arrested in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district for travelling under a fake identity, police said on Thursday.
The 35-year-old foreign national was detained by local villagers on Wednesday while allegedly attempting to illegally cross over to Bangladesh, officials said.
West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh said the man, identified as William Addo Agyei, had initially introduced himself as Stanley Obayendo. He later disclosed his real identity during sustained interrogation by the police.
Agyei, a resident of Kumasi Accra in Ghana, had entered India on a medical visa in June 2025, which was valid for three months. Although he applied for an extension, he reportedly did not receive any response from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Singh said.
Recently, he received an email from the FRRO instructing him to report either to their office or to the Banaswadi Police Station in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Instead of complying, Agyei allegedly sought help from a tout identified as Frank, who promised to facilitate his illegal entry into Bangladesh through Meghalaya.
