TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has submitted a complaint to the Executive Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE), alleging the improper implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project in several villages in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district.
The union claimed that there was improper implementation of the project in several rural villages including Siju Asakbanda, Siju Do’bakkol, Siju Mandal Gittok, Siju Bazar area, and Siju Ariteka.
According to the GSU, numerous households in these villages have not received water pipeline connections, while others have received tap water without proper household connections.
“Solar pumps in some areas are non-functional, and villages like Siju Mandal Gittok and Siju Bazar have yet to see any pipeline installation,” the students’ body claimed.
The union further alleges that Siju Mandal Gittok has been entirely excluded from the scheme.
Demanding a thorough investigation into the matter, the GSU has urged the authorities to take strict action against those responsible for the mismanagement of the JJM project.
Notably, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched by the Government of India, aims to provide piped water supply (‘har ghar nal se jal’) to all rural households by 2024.
The mission aims to ensure access to safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household in India, thereby improving health, hygiene, and overall quality of life, particularly for women and children.
