Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday met senior officials of the education department and the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) to identify examination centres at Gambegre in West Garo Hills district.
Sangma took up the issue with the senior officials following demands by the students, who often face problems travelling to far-flung areas to appear Class X and Class XII board exams.
The senior education department and MBoSE officials reportedly told the Chief Minister that they would explore the possibilities of setting up at least one or more examination centres in Gambegre.
The Gambegre constituency, which is located south of Tura, has remained as a neglected patch for the last two decades.
Lack of proper educational and healthcare infrastructure in Gambegre has been a cause of serious concern, and a large section of people requested the government to bail them out of the inopportune condition.
Road infrastructure in Gambegre has also been pitiable, and commuting becomes extremely difficult during the monsoon season.
A section of people in Gambegre expressed their displeasure that Saleng A Sangma, who represented the constituency since 2008 as a legislator, failed to guarantee overall development.
Since Saleng A Sangma registered victory in Tura Lok Sabha constituency recently, the electorates of Gambegre are now keen to get a new legislator, who would bring about development in the area.
