Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a proposal to provide several benefits to retired chief justices and judges of the state’s High Court, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Tuesday.
The approved provisions include free electricity of up to 1,000 units per month, a mobile recharge allowance of RS. 4,200 per month plus taxes, and 100 litres of petrol per month.
These benefits are part of amendments to the Retired Judges’ Secretarial Assistant and Domestic Help Rules, 2013, Sangma stated during a press briefing after the Cabinet meeting.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved an amendment to the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, which designates Khasi and Garo as associate official languages for district-level examinations.
Another major decision included the adoption of new laws under the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025, aimed at safeguarding witnesses involved in criminal cases.
The chief minister emphasiSed that a comprehensive mechanism is being put in place to ensure the protection of witnesses, as mandated by the new criminal laws.

In other decisions, the Cabinet approved the appointment of retired Chief Secretary P.S. Thangkhiew as Chairman of the Meghalaya Farmers’ Empowerment Commission.
It also constituted a search committee for the appointment of a Lokayukta, to be headed by former bureaucrat P.S. Dkhar.
