SHILLONG: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Senior Congress leader Salseng C Marak passed away on Friday. He was 82.

The former chief minister breathed his last at Tura Civil Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. He was admitted to the Holy Cross Hospital on August 8 and later shifted to the Tura Civil Hospital on August 12.

Marak, who served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1993 –1998, was the 6th chief minister of the state.

The veteran Congress leader represented the Resubelpara constituency in North Garo Hills in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Known as ‘Mr  Clean’ of Meghalaya politics, Marak was one of the most respected political leaders of the state.

He was also one of the most vocal politicians openly opposing the militant-politician nexus and maintained that it may affect Congress policies and principles.

He was also the president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in 2003.

Born in 1941, Marak attended Kolkata’s Scottish Church College.
