Mukul Sangma, the leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in Meghalaya, on Wednesday firmly refuted the circulating rumours about his potential return to the Congress party. Speaking to reporters, Sangma made it clear that he has no intention of rejoining Congress, describing the speculations as “baseless and false.”
“Why should I look at Congress to come back? Have I not shared my view with the people of the state?” Sangma stated, stressing that such rumours have no basis in fact. He further asserted his commitment to his current political stance and emphasized his ongoing efforts for the development of the state.
Sangma, who served as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 2010 to 2018, took the opportunity to defend his political career. He pointed out that the previous government had made significant efforts to address the needs of the people, highlighting the achievements during his tenure. “The past government worked very hard for the people of the state,” he said, adding that the present government must aim to set a new benchmark for building Meghalaya’s future.
The former chief minister also voiced criticism of the current state administration, accusing it of failing to create equal opportunities for the people. “When I talk about opportunities, I mean equal opportunities for all. However, the business opportunities in the state are increasingly being monopolized and are only available to a select few,” Sangma remarked.
Responding to a question about the possibility of forming a new political party, Sangma clarified that he has not made any commitments in this regard. “I am still with the AITC,” he affirmed, putting to rest any speculation about him breaking away to form a separate political entity.
Earlier, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent Pala had hinted that TMC leaders, including Sangma and Charles Pyngrope, might consider returning to Congress ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. However, these claims were swiftly refuted by both Sangma and his party, the Trinamool Congress.
Sangma, who made a high-profile switch to the Trinamool Congress in 2021 along with 11 other MLAs, had been one of the most influential leaders in Congress during his tenure. His move to the AITC was seen as a significant shift in the political landscape of Meghalaya.
As the political landscape in Meghalaya continues to evolve, Sangma’s stance suggests that he remains firmly committed to his current party, putting an end to the swirling rumours about his potential return to Congress.
