Shillong: Police in Shillong have detained five individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals for entering and travelling within India without valid documents.
The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Mawlai Police and the Special Operations Team (SOT) on Monday at the ISBT junction in Mawlai Mawiong, officials said on Tuesday.
The suspects have been identified as Md Fajid Bilul (47), Lelepa Begum (40), Musamat Jahana Khatoon (35), Md Alamgir Mia (25) and Md Imammul Hassan (18).
According to police, the group was travelling from Srinagar and was en route to Bangladesh via Shillong when they were intercepted.
Acting on a specific input, security personnel stopped a tourist taxi at the ISBT junction and detained the passengers after they failed to produce passports or any valid travel documents.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said a criminal case has been registered at Mawlai Police Station, and the matter is under investigation.
The accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody, Syiem added.
