Shillong: Rifiness Warjri, Meghalaya’s youngest mountaineer to conquer Mount Everest, presented a rock from the world’s highest peak to the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) on Thursday.

The 20-year-old mountaineer, who successfully summited Everest earlier this year, handed over the geological specimen to Director Mardondor Tongper, calling it a tribute to her home state and a beacon of inspiration for Meghalaya’s youth.

The rock will now be displayed at the DMR as both a geological artifact and a motivational exhibit.

“This is more than just a rock from Everest,” said Tongper while receiving the gift.

“It symbolises courage, discipline, and the boundless potential of Meghalaya’s youth. It will serve as a lasting reminder that even the sky is not the limit when young minds dream big.”

Rifiness is only the fourth person from Meghalaya to scale Everest, following the footsteps of Gary Jarman Lamare (2012), Wansuk Myrthong (2013), and Dolyne Kharbhih (2016).

Her achievement stands out not only for her age but also for the determination it represents.

“Climbing Everest was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Rifiness shared during the ceremony.

“But it taught me that no goal is unreachable if you prepare, believe in yourself, and persevere. I wanted to leave behind something tangible — a message to every young person in Meghalaya that greatness is within our reach.”

The event was held at the DMR premises in Shillong, where Rifiness was also felicitated in the presence of department officials and staff.

The rock she donated will be preserved and showcased to inspire visitors, including students and aspiring adventurers.

“This isn’t just a geological sample; it’s a story of perseverance, and it now belongs to every young dreamer in the state,” Tongper added.

Rifiness extended her heartfelt gratitude to her family, mentors, the state government, and above all, God, for the strength and support she received throughout her expedition.

She also expressed her commitment to promoting sports, adventure, and environmental awareness among Meghalaya’s youth through her journey ahead.
