Shillong: As Meghalaya is gearing up for the state assembly election early 2023, Moolamylliang village in East Jaintia district is gearing up for an election-themed Christmas celebrations this year.
Since Christmas is the biggest festival in Christian-dominated state of Meghalaya, the villagers decided to make the celebration more special, crafting awareness for the electorates for the upcoming election.
Residents of Moolamylliang decorated all the trees that have been planted in the village and also the surroundings in line with the Election 2023 of Meghalaya.
F.R. Kharkongor, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Meghalaya attended the illumination programme at Moolamylliang, and thanked the village council for creating election awareness this Christmas.
The Election Commission of India (ECI), under its flagship programme, the Systematic Voters’ Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP), has been creating awareness for participation and free and fair election.
The chief electoral officer of Meghalaya on Wednesday tweeted about the election-themed Christmas illumination at Moolamylliang: “Election-themed #Christmas lighting adorns the Christmas village, Moolamylliang in #Meghalaya to celebrate the festival and the upcoming festival of democracy. @ceomeghalaya has showcased the theme in the form of Christmas lighting ahead of the upcoming elections in the State.”

A map of Meghalaya was carved out using the support of the trees where a message – Meghalaya Election 2023 – your voice, your choice is displayed.
Moolamylliang is a village under Saipung Block in East Jaintia hills district of Meghalaya, located at a distance of 10 kms from Khliehriat, the district headquarters.
The village has become famous beacon of greenery and cleanliness among the villages of East Jaintia hills district. Moolamylliang is filled with lush green landscape.
The houses and streets at Moolamylliang are clean, trees planted in every nook and corner and both the young and old ensure there is no littering.
Moolamylliang suffered the worst brunt from coal mining during the last two decades. But, the village leaders have the vision and foresight to focus on other sustainable forms of livelihood like tourism.
Every year, people of Moolamylliang organises the Annual Christmas Lights Festival.
The entire village is lighted up and decorated with bright and beautiful lights and decorations of all shapes and colours marking the birth of Jesus Christ.
In 2021, the villagers of Moolamylliang had done the Christmas illumination in line with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the creation of the state of Meghalaya.
The display of election-themed Christmas illumination will remain until January 2, the villagers said.
