SHILLONG: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned Rs 126.94 crore for the construction of an Information Technology (IT) Park in Meghalaya’s Tura.

The amount has been sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) scheme.

Expressing his appreciation for the financial support, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to social media to announce the development on Saturday.

He wrote, “Happy to announce that @MDoNER_India has sanctioned ₹126.94 Crore for the construction of an IT Park at Tura under the PM-DevINE Scheme. Our gratitude to Hon’ble PM Sh. @narendramodi ji, Hon’ble Union Minister for DoNER, Sh. @kishanreddybjp ji and GoI.”

The initiative aims to bridge connectivity deficits, address social sector gaps, and enhance livelihood and employment opportunities across the state.

Chief Minister Sangma has been advocating for the establishment of IT Parks across Meghalaya to stimulate economic growth and foster technological innovation.

Earlier on February 2, 2022, Meghalaya had inaugurated the ‘Shillong Technology Park’ offering IT professionals from Meghalaya and beyond a platform to contribute to their home state and propel it towards becoming one of India’s top 10 states in the next decade.

The IT Park in New Shillong Township holds significant potential for expansion due to ample available space.

In 2023, a representative from a Bangalore-based IT company had visited Shillong with intentions to establish a branch in the region.

Expressing interest in collaborating with the government, they indicated plans to employ approximately 3000 young IT professionals within Shillong contingent upon obtaining all necessary clearances.

In September 2023, Chief Minister Sangma had visited IT-hub Hyderabad to explore collaboration opportunities between Meghalaya and Telangana.

During his visit, he met with then Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and engaged in discussions with the team from T-Hub, an innovation intermediary and business incubator in Hyderabad.
