Shillong: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday dismissed a recent travel advisory issued by the United States, which cautioned its citizens against visiting Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to alleged terrorism and violence.
Tynsong reaffirmed that Meghalaya is among the safest destinations for travellers worldwide.
Speaking on the matter, Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, expressed surprise and disappointment at the advisory.
“It’s unfortunate that the US has categorized Meghalaya this way. We don’t know where they get such information,” he said.
Highlighting the state’s commitment to safety and its renowned hospitality, the deputy CM said, “Meghalaya is one of the safest places in the world. Our people are known for their warmth and generosity.”
Tynsong urged skeptics to rely on first-hand accounts from visitors to Meghalaya.
“Those who have experienced our state and met the hardworking villagers will vouch for its beauty and safety. These visitors are our true ambassadors,” he added.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh echoed Tynsong’s sentiments and emphasised the state’s thriving tourism sector.
He noted that Meghalaya is projected to welcome over 2 million visitors this year, aided by a year-long calendar of cultural events, including the popular Cherry Blossom Festival.
To enhance the tourist experience, the state government has introduced a “Tourist Buddies” program, wherein trained personnel will assist visitors at key locations.
“Fifty Tourist Buddies will be deployed in Shillong at popular sites like Wards Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad,” Lyngdoh announced.

The government is also investing heavily in tourism infrastructure, with plans to allocate over Rs. 1,000 crore to the sector.
A senior tourism official highlighted that tourism directly and indirectly employs over 50,000 people in Meghalaya, making it the state’s second-largest job provider after the government.
Rejecting the US advisory, Tynsong assured that Meghalaya continues to be a safe and welcoming destination, offering unparalleled natural beauty and cultural richness.
