SHILLONG: In view of inclement weather following the landfall of Cyclone Remal in West Bengal and neighbouring Bangladesh on Monday, the Meghalaya government has announced closure of schools in five of its districts tomorrow.
The affected districts include East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills, East Garo Hills, and West Garo Hills.
The decision follows a review meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, attended by top officials including the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary on May 27.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma attended the meet virtually.
During the meeting, instructions were issued to all Deputy Commissioners and village-level stakeholders to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students and educational staff amid the cyclonic storm alert.
In East Khasi Hills, Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), urged the public to stay indoors and avoiding unnecessary travel.
Residents have been urged to adhere to safety protocols, secure valuables, and stay updated through social media and government official channels.
To ensure swift assistance, emergency contact numbers have been provided, with the District Emergency Operation Centre reachable at 1077.
Similar precautionary measures have been instructed in Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram.
The State Disaster Management Authority has been alerted to remain prepared for any necessary action.
Earlier in the day, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong had assured the public that the government is prepared to tackle any untoward situation.
“From the government side, we are fully prepared, be it financially or physically, or whatever situation arises,” he said.
