The ongoing curfew in Meghalaya’s violence-hit West Garo Hills district has been extended until 6 am on March 15, officials said on Saturday.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal, the curfew will remain in force across the district until 6 am on Sunday. However, authorities allowed a relaxation period on Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm to enable residents to procure essential commodities.
Officials said that movement of residents will remain restricted during the curfew, except during designated relaxation hours, and residents have been instructed to stay indoors at all other times.
All educational institutions, banks, markets, shops, offices and commercial establishments across the district will remain closed during the curfew period.
Only establishments providing essential services, including hospitals, pharmacies, emergency services and utilities, will be allowed to operate.
On the other hand, the curfew imposed in the East Garo Hills district will continue until further orders, the officials said.
Williamnagar Main Bazar in East Garo Hills will be allowed to operate from 6 am to 1 pm, District Magistrate R P Marak said in another order.
Law enforcement agencies, magistrates and police officers have been directed to strictly enforce the order and take action against violators, they said.
