Shillong: The construction of the much-anticipated Shillong Ropeway Project is set to commence by mid-November.
Meghalaya’s Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh recently stated that significant progress has been made on the Shillong Ropeway project.
He said that the ground-level work is expected to start in the middle of November of this year.
The tourism minister said that there has been no cost escalation, with the project remaining within the estimated budget of Rs 175 crore.
On the current stage of the bidding process, Lyngdoh stated, “We are now in the process of opening two bids — a technical bid and a financial bid. Three companies, all meeting the international CEN standard for ropeway projects, are participating in the bid. . This is an international benchmark for ropeway projects in Europe. Given our challenging topography, we’re aiming for the highest quality.”
By adhering to the European CEN standard, the ropeway project will prioritize safety and operational efficiency, delivering a high-quality experience for users.
The ropeway will connect Lawsohtun to Shillong Peak.
President Droupadi Murmu laid the foundation stone for the Shillong Ropeway project on January 16 this year.

The project, which was slated to begin in July this year, was postponed due to the monsoon season.
The Meghalaya Cabinet in September 2022 approved the construction of the first passenger ropeway project in the state.
The project is expected to be completed within the next two years.
