Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated two newly constructed Block Development Integrated Complexes in East Garo Hills district, while urging citizens to accelerate Aadhaar enrollment to ensure seamless delivery of government services.
The complexes, located in Songsak and Dambo Rongjeng, are part of a wider initiative to strengthen grassroots governance by improving administrative infrastructure across the state.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Minister Abu Taheer Mondal, Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise Marak, and MLAs Jim Sangma and Rupert Momin.
Speaking at the event, the chief minister emphasised the state government’s long-term vision for rural development.
“When the MDA government assumed office in 2018, many C&RD blocks were operating in poor conditions, often without proper office spaces for Block Development Officers. Recognising the importance of these administrative units, we launched a comprehensive upgrade plan,” Sangma said.
He noted that the infrastructure upgrade began with six blocks and is now being scaled to all 56 C&RD blocks across Meghalaya.
The construction of the new facilities has been funded under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, with a total allocation of Rs 120 crore, aimed at enhancing the state’s infrastructure.
“These new complexes will not only create a better working environment for government employees but also ensure improved access to public services for citizens,” the chief minister added.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the chief minister took the opportunity to call for increased Aadhaar enrollment in the state.
Meghalaya continues to have one of the lowest Aadhaar enrollment rates in the country, which Sangma said is a challenge for transparent and efficient governance.
“To ensure transparency, efficiency, and accountability in implementing central government schemes, Aadhaar linkage has been made mandatory. We urge all eligible citizens to enrol at the earliest,” he stated.
