Shillong: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of a 29.03-kilometre Tura Bypass in Meghalaya.
“In Meghalaya, we have sanctioned Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura Bypass, extending from NH-127B to NH-217, built to a 2-lane configuration with paved shoulders. The project, spanning 29.03 kilometres in the Tura district, is of significant strategic value,” Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, posted on X.
Gadkari highlighted that NH-217, formerly known as NH-51, serves as a crucial link between Guwahati and Dalu—a key inland customs check-post situated on the India-Bangladesh international border.
“The proposed bypass will commence near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and terminate at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is designed to circumvent the current alignment of NH-217, which traverses the densely developed and heavily congested urban core of Tura town, where narrow road widths and substantial traffic volumes impede mobility,” the union minister said.
The minister emphasized that once completed, the project is expected to ease traffic flow, reduce travel time and enhance road safety in the region.
He said, “This infrastructure will not only alleviate congestion within Tura but also enhance road safety by segregating local traffic from through traffic.”
